CULTURE ON THE MOVE: CULTURE CIRCUITS IN AND OUT OF AFRICA

This panel invites papers on the circulation of cultural products in Africa, andfrom Africa to Europe or elsewhere. Proposed focus is on the cultural exchange fostered byfestivals on and outside the African continent – book fairs, theatre festivals, film, musicand fine arts events –, but may also focus on the mobility engendered by writers/artistsprogrammes or individual initiatives. Which social, cultural and political impact do eventssuch as the Grahamstown Festival, the Dakar Biennale or the Hargeysa International BookFair have on cultural industries on the ground and transcontinentally? How do theyinfluence cultural production in the diaspora? Which bearing does the participation infestivals/programmes outside Africa have on artists and their work? And which roles doinner-African and international funding bodies play in the creation of culture? Other topicsrelated to cultural mobility in and out of Africa are equally welcome.
