After the fall of the President Siad Barre in 1991for over twenty years Somalia has been labeled as the world's most emblematic ‘failed state’. These two decades were marked by a general anarchy, atrocious fighting between rival warlords, sectarian and ethnic violence, two famines (1992, 2010) caused by drought, unsuccessful attempts of international mediation, pirate attacks along its coasts and, finally, a lack of interest by the international community. However, since 2011 something has seemed to be slowly changed, bringing the launch of a process of slow stabilization and a new precarious balance. The panel’s aim is to analyze recent developments and the new challenges that are awaiting Somalia trying to understand from different perspectives (identity, economic and geopolitical) both the dynamics of change that are taking place and the future outlook.SOMALIA.
